Food for the household
The steward places food into another person's hands. Jesus describes a faithful servant entrusted with feeding the household at the proper time; responsibility becomes care for the people before him.
The master places a servant over the household with responsibility to provide food at the proper time. The question is what that servant will do while the master is absent. Jesus makes readiness concrete through care that other people need to receive. Matthew 24:45-51

Responsibility turned toward self
A contrasting steward keeps his attention on his own table while others wait. This restrained scene pictures neglected care alongside Jesus' warning about a servant who uses his master's delay as permission to mistreat the household.
The faithful servant continues the work. The unfaithful servant takes the delay as permission to mistreat others and indulge himself. The master's return reveals which attitude has governed the entrusted authority. Waiting has not been empty time; it has shown the servant's character.
Luke records Peter asking whether the teaching is for the disciples or for everyone. Jesus' answer develops accountability in relation to knowledge and what has been entrusted. Greater responsibility is not merely greater status; it carries an obligation to use the trust faithfully. Luke 12:41-48

The returning master finds the steward still serving the household. Jesus calls that servant blessed: the master's arrival reveals the faithful work already underway.
Consider a place where another person depends on your attention. The parable invites service that remains dependable when no one appears to be checking. Its warning against abuse also matters: authority in the household is given for care, not as a license to dominate.
