Jesus describes an unclean spirit leaving a person, passing through dry places, and returning to the former house. It finds the house empty, swept, and arranged, then returns with seven others more wicked than itself. The final condition is worse than the first. Matthew 12:38-45

The passage should not be turned into a diagnosis of mental illness or a set of medical instructions. Nor does it provide a method for identifying unseen spirits in another person's life. Its spiritual warning deserves to be read in the context of response to Jesus.
