The gathering desired and refused
The gathering is desired but refused. That tension belongs to the passage: His care does not remove the hearers' agency. The image expresses both the shelter He would offer and the sorrow of an invitation that is not received.
Luke preserves the lament in another surrounding sequence of His journey. Reading both accounts can deepen attention to His words without requiring us to resolve every chronological question. Neither account authorizes contempt toward Jewish people today. Luke 13:34-35
